Executive Director

Our client, The BC Epilepsy Society, is seeking a leader who is a self-starter with proven management, communication and relationship-building skills. The Executive Director will lead the society in the delivery of a variety of programs and services, and secure funding to ensure continued success and growth of the organization.

This role is responsible for implementing the strategic plan and vision as developed in collaboration with the Board of Directors. She/he has a passion for helping people and an understanding of the challenges of living with epilepsy and drive to advocate for people living with epilepsy.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement an operational plan which incorporates the strategic goals and objectives of the organization.
  • Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization.
  • Participate with the Board of Directors in nurturing the vision and strategic plans to guide the organization. Identify, assess, and inform the Board of Directors of internal and external issues that affect the organization.
  • Foster effective team work between the Board and the Executive Director and between the Executive Director and staff.
  • Represent the organization at community activities to enhance the organization's community profile when appropriate.
  • Ensure that personnel, participant, donor and volunteer files are securely stored and privacy/confidentiality is maintained.
  • Oversee the planning, implementation and evaluation of the organization's programs and services.
  • Ensure that the curriculum, programs and services offered by the organization contribute to the organization's vision and purposes and in collaboration with the Board.
  • Monitor the day-to-day delivery of the curriculum, programs and services of the organization to maintain or improve quality.
  • Oversee the implementation of the human resources policies, procedures and practices, including the recruiting, interviewing and selection of staff that have the ability to help further the organization's mission.
  • Establish a positive, healthy and safe work environment in accordance with all appropriate legislation and regulations.
  • Overall management of staff and volunteers.
  • Work with staff and the Board (Finance Committee) to prepare a comprehensive budget.
  • Work with the Board to secure adequate funding for the operation of the organization which includes contributing to the development and implementation of fund raising events.
  • Research funding sources/grants, oversee and/or write funding proposals to increase the funds of the organization.
  • Communicate with members, donors and funders to keep them informed of the work of the organization and to identify changes in the community served by the organization.
  • Attend events and speak on behalf of The BC Epilepsy Society when required.
  • Establish good working relationships and collaborative arrangements with community groups, funders, politicians, and other organizations to help achieve the goals of the organization.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 5+ years of progressive management experience in a non-profit organization.
  • Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget.
  • Past success working effectively with a Board of Directors.
  • Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders and cultures.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator with excellent interpersonal and multidisciplinary project skills.
  • Action-oriented, entrepreneurial, adaptable, and innovative approach to business planning.
  • Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people.
  • Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude, mission-driven, and self-directed
  • Proficient in MS Office.
  • Excellent command of the English language both written and verbal.
